En 1686, Louis XIV confie à Vauban la construction d’une fortification à Fort-Louis situé, à l’époque, sur une île entre deux bras du Rhin. Vraisemblablement, Vauban se servit des pierres du château de Haguenau pour construire Fort-Louis. Le fort principal au nord du village, appelé fort Carré, était renforcé par deux têtes de pont, l'une sur la rive alsacienne (fort Alsace) et l'autre sur la rive badoise (fort-Marquisat).
